Is It a Cold or Postnasal Drip Syndrome? How to Check the Difference

Do you have all been there – that annoying feeling of having a stuffy or runny nose, a scratchy throat, and just feeling a bit under the weather. Hold on a sec – before you reach for that cold medicine. Let’s make sure we’re not confusing a common cold with something else, like postnasal drip syndrome (PNDS). Don’t worry, I’ve got your back! Let’s break down how to tell the difference.

What’s Postnasal Drip Syndrome (PNDS)?

Imagine feeling like you’ve got a never-ending faucet dripping at the back of your throat. That’s PNDS for you! It’s when extra mucus hangs out in the back of your throat, causing that need to clear your throat or cough. It’s not a separate disease, just a symptom that can be triggered by allergies, sinus infections, or changes in the weather. Here’s how to spot PNDS:

1. Time Frame

A cold is like a short-term visitor – it sticks around for about a week or so. But PNDS can be like that guest who overstays their welcome, hanging out for weeks or even months.

2. The State of Mucus

Picture your mucus. Is it thin and watery, making you feel like you need to clear your throat? That’s PNDS mucus. But if it’s thick and colorful, like a rainbow you’d rather not see, it’s more likely a cold.

3. No Cold Vibes

Got the runny nose, sneezing, sore throat, coughing, a fever, or body aches? Well, those are signs of a cold, not just PNDS. PNDS usually doesn’t bring these party crashers along.

4. An Invasion of Allergies

If your symptoms get wild during certain times of the year or when you’re around furry friends, allergies might be playing a part in your PNDS story.

5. The Long Haul

If you’re feeling like you’re always clearing your throat, coughing, or dealing with that “something stuck in your throat” sensation without other cold symptoms, PNDS could be the main character.

6. The Sharing Game

Colds love to spread the love, so if you’ve been near someone with similar symptoms, you might have caught the bug.

As your immune system gears up, cold symptoms usually start to fade. If things aren’t improving or they’re getting worse, it might not be a cold. Remember, both PNDS and colds can look pretty similar sometimes.

If you’re unsure about what’s going on or you’re feeling really uncomfortable, it’s best to chat with a healthcare pro. They’ll help you figure out what’s causing your symptoms and suggest the right steps to kick those sniffles to the curb. Get a goal!
